Cette exposition est consacrée au « cousin » imprimé du livre photographique, le magazine photographique. Réunissant des documents puisés dans la collection d’Artexte, elle offre un point de vue inédit sur les magazines photographiques publiés au Québec et au Canada entre 1970 et 1990 – Impressions, Image Nation, OVO, Photo Communiqué, Blackflash et Ciel variable. Ces publications témoignent de l’essor de l’activité photographique durant cette période et de l’établissement d’un discours sur la photographie contemporaine au Canada. Mis en contexte dans l’exposition par une ligne de temps qui brosse un tableau plus global de l’institutionnalisation rapide de la photographie au Canada dans les années 1970 et 1980, ces magazines peuvent être largement catégorisés comme des lieux de convergence pour les différents acteurs et idées en circulation, ou comme des forums d’exploration visuelle sous forme imprimée. Présentés sous un angle qui vise à en révéler la valeur historique, les magazines sélectionnés invitent à une reconsidération de cette période dynamique dans l’histoire de la photographie contemporaine au Canada.

This exhibition is devoted to the photobook’s print “cousin”: the photography magazine. Composed of documents drawn from Artexte’s collection, it offers a new perspective on the photography magazines published in Quebec and Canada between 1970 and 1990 – Impressions, Image Nation, OVO, Photo Communiqué, Blackflash and Ciel variable. The assembled publications attest to a “boom” of photographic activity during this period and to the establishment of a discourse on contemporary photography in Canada. Contextualized in the exhibition by a timeline designed to paint a wider picture of the rapid institutionalization of photography in Canada during the 1970s and 1980s, these magazines can be broadly categorized as meeting grounds for the various actors and ideas in circulation or outlets for visual exploration in printed form. Presented from a vantage point that aims to convey their historical value, the selected magazines invite a reconsideration of this vibrant period in the history of contemporary photography in Canada.
